San Pedro Eats
I must admit that I love food. One of the things I enjoy most about San Pedro are all the dining options. If I want to eat like I would have back in North America, or eat like a local I have an array of options.
One of my favourite restaurants is Wild Mango’s. The award winning chef Amy Knox delivers a great lunch and dinner menu, offering fresh salads with unique dressing, huge burritos, an extensive ceviche menu, and amazing small bites. For dinner my favourite is the beef tenderloin, which for sure the best beef that I have come across so far in San Pedro, and being from Alberta I certainly know and love my beef.
If I feel like breakfast at 2:00pm, its possible at Estele’s, a staple here on the Island. Along with all day breakfast they also serve up local fare like burritos, tacos, and stewed chicken, ceviche and whole fish. The family owned Estele’s truly offers home cooking, and their bloody mary’s and sangria are the best on the Island. Located right on the beach in the centre of town, they are for sure I must visit when you are here.
When I first got here, I figured sushi would be plentiful, but it was not the case. All though a few have tried, no one has delivered what I was accustomed to with the exception of Fusion, located above Fido’s. You wont find the varied sushi offerings here as in North America, but they do create fantastic rolls that are fresh, local, and definitely delicious.
If you want to get out of the core of San Pedro, then head north over the bridge and make a stop at Legends Burger House. Owned by an awesome couple from Fresno California, they have certainly brought the American burger to Ambergris Caye. With over a dozen different burgers to choose from, crispy fries, and draft beer, Legends for offers the best burgers on the Island, plus they have Tuesday jam nights, and Thursday poker tournaments.
Seeking tranquil and sexy, then Rojo Lounge at Azul Resort is the perfect spot for both. This exotic lounge offers the best in gourmet on Island. Lunch and dinner offerings are exceptionally prepared by Chef Jeff, and they also offer a deli for take out goods like their red pepper hummus, ceviche, and sandwiches. We love heading there in the afternoon for lunch so we can take advantage of the awesome infinity pool that overlooks the clear blue Caribbean waters, and the fantastic company of the hosts Fin, and Vivian. Rojo is my home away from home, and a real culinary treat.
The water taxi in town takes you up to the resorts north on the Island, so it’s easy to get to a few more of my favourites like Portofino and Rendezvous, as well as Rojo. I really enjoy the efficient boat ride, it’s also a great way to get a good view of the island.
Looking for good cheap food? That is plentiful here in San Pedro. From street vendors in the park, Chinese food, and local deli’s you can eat a full meal for less than $10.00 USD and feel completely satisfied. I’m for sure getting hooked on chow mien with deep fried chicken, usually after having too much fun the night before, but like anywhere the grease craving has to be fulfilled.
My plans are to keep eating my way around the Island, and look forward to sharing with you all my great finds.
