Sailing the day away
On Saturday a small group of us set sail to Caye Caulker, a smaller Caye just a few miles south of Ambergris Caye. There are a few Catamaran companies on the Island, we chose to go with Seduced, as they have great staff, and the 38ft Cat certainly can accommodate a group up to 25 people. The Catamaran was stocked with lots of beer, freshly made and potent, rum punch, colas, and snacks. The boat captain got the tunes pumping and we were ready to set sail to Caye Caulker. The tour generally offers a snorkel stop at Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley for an additional $10.00 BZ, and with the tour price itself at only $75.00 BZ, its an awesome deal.
We opted out of that option as we were strictly on a drinking, chilling out sail, but we did end up anchoring off Caye Caulker for a snorkel around the coral, and in hopes to catch up to a manatee the captain spotted. We never managed to actually spot the manatee once we were in the water, but once we were, the coral, fish, and the crystal blue Caribbean waters was certainly worth the pit stop. The current was a bit strong, so some of us just chilled on the boat with a Belikin, and a few others just jumped over the side for a quick refreshing swim. Overall a stunning spot to be in amazement at how beautiful your surroundings are.
We decided to get going, and continue on to Caye Caulker so we could get a couple hours there. Our favourite place to chill is the “split” which was formed in the 60′s when a hurricane ripped the Island in half creating the most idyllic swimming hole, and certainly the perfect place to snorkel and work on your tan. The Lazy Lizard located right at the split offers inexpensive local food, tropical drinks, and plenty of tables both on the beach and in the water itself. Most of us just went straight there for the cold beers, and and snacks, and a few others went for lunch elsewhere, then caught up to us after. There’s usually about 2.5 hours allotted in Caye Caulker, so plenty of time to check it all out if you have had enough sun.

Besides swimming, relaxing, eating and drinking, Caye Caulker offers travel for the more budget minded, as well those seeking a less developed Caye. Typically accommodations are less than Ambergris Caye and geared more towards backpackers. Tropic Air, as well as the water taxis offer transport to the Island either through Belize City, or San Pedro, Ambergris Caye.
Caye Caulker is certainly a place to visit while you are in Belize, and considering it’s proximity to Ambergris Caye, it really is an easy and economical day trip.
Let Gay Travel Belize customize a vacation that is perfect for you, that’s what we are here to do. Keep the good times rolling, or in this case sailing!
