Living the Life in Belize
It’s hard for me to believe it, but I just celebrated my one year anniversary of living here in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. I decided to leave my home town of Calgary, Alberta Canada as I simply had enough of all the hustle and bustle. I had been here for 6 months off and on in 2008, and just knew this was the place I wanted to start a new chapter in my life.
The warm breezes, crystal clear blue caribbean waters, white powder sand beaches and the residents here made this an easy decision. People always ask me what I do here, and besides the site, I have just been enjoying my new found freedom. There is of course work available, self employment is really the best option. It allows your work permit application to seem more acceptable as you could in turn be providing jobs for locals. A bar or restaurant, and of course real estate seem to be the top picks, outside of a web business.
If Island life is not your top pick, then the mainland offers serene pastoral lands, rolling hills, mountains, water falls, rain forests, rivers, and the ancient Mayan Ruins. Cost of living is less here than on Ambergris Caye, and with the small size of the country you can easily hit the beaches in about an hour.
If you are planning on retiring here the incentives are fantastic. Enjoy off shore banking, no capital gains tax, and a substantially lower property tax system. In general cost of living very reasonable, and the ownership rights are the same as Canada and the USA.
I have put together a little video montage of the past year here, hope you enjoy!
