Friar Tuck’s Cantina

Friar Tuck’s Cantina

San Pedro, Ambergris Caye definitely has it’s share of restaurants. Local eateries consist of fine dining, local belizean food, to street tacos, but at long last San Pedro has Tex Mex. The recent opening of Friar Tuck’s Cantina offers a fantastic range of Tex Mex classics. Located just north of the bridge in the Cloisters, an upscale condominium project, the restaurant offers an open and airy casual atmosphere, with an extensive bar, and quaint seating. The pool is also available to guests who dine at the Cantina, a perfect way to spend the afternoon, sipping on their awesome margarita’s, a Belikin, or rum punch and savouring one of the Islands best conch ceviche.

I was warmly greeted by proprietor Tammy, who had  great success with her previous establishment, the Humming Bird Cafe, as well as the lovely host Stephanie who made the best margarita. The move to Tex Mex was definitely a smart one, as this is the only place to get the goods. The menu is extensive, everything from Burritos, Enchiladas, Chili Rellanos, Tacos, Tamales, Tostadas, Flautas, Fajitas, Chili, Quesadillas, Salads, Soups, Nachos, Guacamole and much much more.

I was offered and selection of the top picks. My dinner included the conch ceviche $15.00, which was so tender and full of flavour, I almost filled myself up on that alone. My next sample was the famed Jalapeno poppers for $18.00, nice and spicy and if the heat is too much a cooling sauce accompanies the dish. Next up was the hard shell beef taco. The taco shells are made fresh daily, and were stuffed with seasoned ground beef, tomato, lettuce, shredded cheddar and a healthy dollop of sour cream, and served with refried beans and spanish rice for $18.00. The wings, $15.00, were up next. they offer hot, serioulsly hot, and bbq. Also on Wednesday these bad boys are available for a $1.00 each, and they are as good as they get. At this point I was getting full, but the job must continue, and so did the food. I was then offered the soft shelled fish taco $18.00, and beef brisket taco $20.00. Both were deliciously seasoned, the meat was tender, and rich with sauce. Lastly, the chili. Perfectly seasoned, and topped with shredded cheddar cheese, and sour cream, and a side of homemade tortillas chips for $18.00

Along with their regular menu they also offer very affordable lunch specials for $10.00, and daily happy hour 3-6. They also have dance Lessons on Wednesday nights at 6:00. Saturday’a are the BBQ special, with your choice of Chicken or Ribs, all served up with stewed beans and pasta salad, plus live music 3-7. Sunday is Bloody Mary Sunday, a perfect way to start the day!

Friar Tuck’s Cantina will also host private parties, as well as an array of parties from Poker runs, to scavenger hunts. Open Tuesday – Sunday 11:00- 9:00.

Happy Eating!

  1. I’m fairly new to the island but have quickly become a “regular” at The Cantina! My husband and I are there at least twice a week it seems. Always for the Saturday BBQ and live music, and then again at least once for a lunch special, since it’s the best food and best deal going.

We love Tammy and the staff, and the cooking is amazing! They’ve really made us feel welcome on the island. Big thumbs up from us!
