Windsurfing
If you are looking to sail in uncrowded water where you are not swamped with other windsurfers and are happy in 12–20 knots (Beaufort 4-5) then Belize is heaven. We are not really a high wind centre although we often get winds of 20 plus. If you are looking for 20–30 knots everyday Belize is not for you.
Belize is good for beginners all year round. It is very rare for there to be no breeze at all. Intermediates should look to November through to July.
For the advanced sailor our most consistently windy time is February through June. In November, December and January our wind is often frontal with cold fronts sweeping down from the States and bringing 15-25 knot breezes for 3 to 4 days at a time. February through July we get the trades and thermals. We tend to get morning and afternoon breezes with a lunchtime lull.
Ambergris Caye is dominated by the reef 2/3 mile offshore. This creates a large protected bay for sailing. The predominantly onshore/cross onshore winds make this a reaching paradise. With an onshore wind 5 mile reaches are no problem. Just hook in close the gap and go….
The sailing area has 3 distinct sections:
- Close in to the shore and piers we get some chop for you bump and jump kings.
- Close to the reef it gets glassy smooth for the speedsters and those wanting to sail in peace.
- In the channels through the reef we get the waves, often logo high in windy season.
We keep beginners in the shallows to start with that way we can keep an eye out and help whenever in need. Our crew is allways around to give advise or pull you back if you stray too far.
Kiteboarding
Whether beginner or expert, Ambergris Caye is a great location for kiteboarding!
The shallow reef 2/3mile offshore creates a flat water paradise 20 miles long with No Crowds. Beginners, for your safety all the teaching is conducted just inside the reef in knee deep water, so you dont need to worry about getting dragged into anything dangerous. Intermediates can get assisted launches out by the reef, advanced kiters can launch in several locations just north or south of town.
Downwinders are something else we love to do whether it is 3, 5, or 10 miles or to the next island, whether it is just for fun or to help with your board skills . If you are part of a more adventurous group then the lagoon side of the island is an undiscovered flatwater paradise stretching all the way to Mexico.
Our windiest time of year is February through July when the wind speed is usually 12-20 knots. We do get days of 20 plus knots but not consistently. Most of the year the wind is from the east or northeast giving onshore or cross onshore breeze. October through Jan can be good with cold fronts sweeping in.
Sailing
Ambergris Caye and Belize are fabulous for sailing, whether its exploring the island in a 17ft Getway, racing a friend in one of the 14ft Hobie Waves, you just can’t beat our warm, crystal clear water and steady winds!
The reef located 2/3 mile offshore creates a flatwater paradise for sailors. As the local saying goes “there’s always a breeze in Belize” so you can nearly always get out and sail. On average our most consistently windy time is February through June with 12–20 knots most days.
